character growth, development, arcs

i find it hard to write character growth in shorter books, especially standalones. I'm writing a duology and before I go too deep into the second book I want to understand more about how I can write well-developed characters by the end of it.

most of the books I've read with great character growth span 4-5 books, so a lot can happen. any tips for duologies?
