The term “passed away” should only be applied when someone dies of natural causes

We throw around the term "passed away" for all types of deaths, and I think it should only be used for natural causes like illness or old age. It just makes more sense that way.

When someone dies suddenly or violently, using "passed away" feels like we're trying to sugarcoat something that really shouldn't be. Imagine saying someone "passed away" in a tragic accident or an act of violence—it's like saying, "Oh, they just peacefully drifted off," when in reality, it was anything but peaceful.

For those who have lived long lives or battled illnesses, "passed away" seems more fitting. It gives a sense of a gentle transition, which feels more appropriate.

I get that people prefer gentler language to cope with death, but clarity and accuracy matter. Plus, next time someone asks how your great-uncle "passed away" and you say he was mauled by bears, they're probably going to be confused.
