Why does the news say Ukrainians view Russia as "part of the family"? Didn't Russia treat Ukraine really badly over the last 100 years?
Stalin's purges, the famines, the exploitation of the country for the Soviet State - Russia's relationship with Ukraine always seemed very one-sided, exploitative and abusive to me. So how come people keep emphasizing the point that Ukrainians and Russians are very close to each other, and it looks like a "war between brothers"?
I do not live on either side of the border, but I expected Ukraine and Ukrainians to at least harbor some kind of resentment towards Russia (together with all post soviet-bloc states). I know Ukraine and Russia share a lot of history and culture, but that applies to so many other countries that still make each other's lives miserable through war.
