Scrapping 25% council tax reduction and Pensioners
With discussion going around about scrapping the council tax discount for singles, it concerns me that the media and politicians are only discussing the effect this will have on pensioners.
Approximately half of people living alone are of working age. Both media and politicians seem to have totally forgotten that there are other groups of people existing in the UK other than pensioners. Millions of young people are about to have a huge amount slapped onto their annual bills after years of wage stagnation and the cost of living crisis with only tentative signs of improvement.
I currently live on my own and at some point would like to be able to buy a house and become financially stable but this change will put many of my financial aspirations and that of many other young people, further out of reach. Young early careers people have had an incredibly hard start to working life, coming into covid, cost of living crisis and a stagnant job market which has not improved much since. It would be nice to at least feel like someone is looking out for us.
Not sure Labour will be getting my vote again if this one comes through
