Cecilia is detestable, but in a good way

(more of a meta-theory than a theory on the story itself)

First of all, let me clarify my claim : I believe that, considering what we know of Cecilia, her actions and her thought process, her character is detestable in the sense of her selfish actions. Now what I mean by “in a good way” is that it makes her character much more believable : we can understand why she chooses to act the way she does even if we don’t agree.

Keep in mind that most of the thoughts I’m sharing now have sprouted from the chapters around 442 (the Sovereign Exege skirmish).

My main argument comes from the fact that even though she knows Grey is trying to help them, she still sides with Agrona who she knows has altered her thoughts and is using her as a tool. But from her point of view, the safe bet is the thousand-year-old asura who seems to be much more powerful and as such much more likely to give her what she wants.

I truly believe that her siding with Agrona and not Grey is NOT ignorance, it is from calculated choice.

Now the gray part (not “Grey”) as in what blurs the line, is her position surrounding Nico. She tries to do what will ensure the best result for both of them, even if it means lying to Nico about the true cause of her death. I see that in both a positive and a negative way : what is more important, the result or the way to get it ? (I don’t think a binary answer could ever suffice to that question)

One thing that truly makes her despicable in my eyes is the fact that she disregards all of the hurt she causes around her and seems to take her powers for granted. In that way, I find her actions childish and to somewhat resemble those of a spoiled princess. She does whatever the hell she wants to attain her goal without a single care for the consequences. To answer our earlier question (only in her mind, not in general), it seems very clear that the end justifies the means.

Through all of these I believe that the negative aspects far outweigh the positive and it is that which makes her so detestable in my eyes but what is so satisfying is that I understand why that is.

Now to conclude, I think everything I mentioned contributes to the fact that her character is incredibly well written. And that plays a crucially beneficial part in the story.
