Discussion with Kid Sister

My sister, at 23, is a little over 30 years younger than me. My dad hit it big in tech stocks and remarried someone a few years younger than me (at the time) after my mother died, and here we are.

I love my baby sister, but I don't think we will *ever* understand one another. Age difference, and she was born in the States, which gives her a completely different perspective.

A few weeks ago, there was a girls' night out thing happening at her workplace, and she asked me to come along with her. This is something they do a couple of times a year, apparently, but it was my first time meeting her co-workers.

So we got to the venue, and it was me, in my mid 50s, and about a dozen 20-somethings sitting at a round table, having food and drinks, and just talking. I actually found it difficult to follow much of the conversation due to the fact that they were speaking so quickly, and using English slang with which I am unfamiliar.

But then, we got to the topic of men. My luck with finding non-violent men has been exceptionally poor, and I knew that any contribution I might make to the conversation was going to be a super downer for them, so I more or less just sat back and listened.

Holy shit.

Just about all of them, including my baby sister, (with one holdout who was also just kind of keeping to herself) were pretty firm in that they wanted to find a guy who was, and I quote: "an asshole to everyone else, but tender and loving to me".

This is, apparently, a thing. Once I was sure that was what they were talking about, and I wasn't just misunderstanding something due to non-native tongue and slang, I started to ask them about it - like why this would be desirable at all, under any circumstance, and unfortunately, I didn't get very many answers that advanced my understanding of their position, but I'm pretty sure I *did* alienate my baby sister's friends, and I will clearly not be invited back.

Anybody wanna chime in on that? This attitude sounds *super* toxic to me, and I'm not really able to wrap my head around it.
