Do things get better once they’re vaccinated and can go for walks?
We got a 10 week old Australian Cattle Dog 3.5 weeks ago. I’ve never owned this breed but my husband did many years ago, although the dog was mainly an outside dog. I’m aware they are a high energy breed and need a lot of exercise.
Our pup was a significant biter from day one. His puppy biting wasn’t too sharp when we got him but it’s got significantly worse in the last 2 weeks. Anytime he has access to our arms or hands he bites. The biting is now incredibly painful due to sharp teeth and tonight he bit my hand multiple times and broke the skin. I’m trying to teach bite inhibition and yell a high pitched ‘ow’ loudly but he doesn’t seem to have caught onto anything.
We’re at work 4 days a week and try to burn energy as much before work in the backyard, leave stuffed kong, endless chew toys (ropes, stuffed toys) and puzzles with treats. During the day he’s in an open puppy proofed area of the house (tiled). We come home and he is (understandably) crazy and we spend more time trying to burn energy in the yard but he just won’t. Wind. Down. We sit on the couch in the evening and he is RELENTLESS at jumping up constantly and biting. We have persistently tried to teach him down but we’re getting nowhere, and nudging him off results in harsh bites. We provided an extra bed as his ‘spot’ next to the couch but that hasn’t helped at all. I hit breaking point tonight as my husband had a night away for work so I copped the brunt of it.
Will this crazy relentless biting and jumping at us get better when he’s fully vaccinated and can take him for walks and have more socialisation? He’s in puppy pre school but other than that, it’s been so hard to socialise him outside the home.
