Puppy stares intensely at me

My 11 month old puppy is in a playpen behind me at the other end of the living room when I work from home and when I turn around I can see that he’s intensely staring at me and he will continue intensely staring at me even if I look at him. Those are definitely NOT cute puppy eyes, it’s borderline “I don’t know who you are but I’ll attack if you do anything”

Is this normal??? I mean other than this he’s a very happy doggy who loves mommy
