Strengthening the Commonwealth
It was posted yesterday that Belize had removed the Monarch from their currency and instead placed a national hero. It was noted in the comments that real incentives must be attached to being a Commonwealth realm so that residents would actually feel a tangible connection to the Monarch and the Commonwealth system itself beyond mere symbolism.
I fully agree with this, it has long been a criticism in the Caribbean that the Monarch is distant and not representative of the people, and thus isn't fit to be head of state. Another criticism is how little connection and fraternity there is between realms, especially the UK and the rest of the "CANZUK" grouping. Most of the realms, being Caribbean nations, are already tied together in the Caribbean Community bloc; but beyond that, there is very little that connects us to the rest of the Commonwealth beyond mere history. For Canada, it's more that we have the same system, we're in the Americas, and CA is not the US. For Australia & NZ, it's cricket. Beyond that, nothing much in terms of tangible connections.
For the UK, there's more of a vestigial connection due to them being regarded as the "mother country", but in recent decades, beyond mere foreign aid, the UK has all but washed its hands of the region. It is no surprise that talk of further decolonisation - like this - has picked up pace in the same time period. In Jamaica particularly, it has become a greater talking point that despite sharing the Crown, Jamaicans must go through a lengthy and grueling visa process not too dissimilar to the US just to visit the UK. This is used as evidence that the UK does not care about the region, that there's no benefits to maintaining the Crown, and that we should be republics.
Regardless of one's views on immigration, the concerns here are real. How tangible is this personal union we call the Crown Commonwealth? What does it mean for its residents? What makes it special and worth preserving other than symbolism and historical nostalgia? How do we expect residents to stick up for their monarchies when the political class proposes a republic, when for the vast majority of people, there is no material difference between being a Commonwealth realm with the Crown, and being a Commonwealth republic with a President?
A while back, I had been thinking about how we could strengthen the ties between Commonwealth realms so that it can finally be real and feel real to its citizens, and to also make the Crown a strong institution worthy of being the apex of state in realms outside of the UK, and so that more nations don't follow my own country's example. Whether there's enough political will is another question, but here is a sample agreement that I drafted for your opinion and feedback. Feel free to give your thoughts.
