Keyboard on console for chat

So i play on xbox and i just bought only a keyboard strictly to be able to type quicker in the chat, and ive seen other people do the same. however, i have my keyboard plugged in but whatever i type does not go into the chat at all. Does anyone have any idea how I could fix that?
