IN-USA: What does “while armed with a deadly weapon” mean?

In the state of Indiana and probably others, an aggravating factor for many felonies is if one is committed “while armed with a deadly weapon.”

But what does that mean specifically?

If someone has, for example, a pair of scissors or a pocket knife in the bottom of a book bag 6-8 feet away at the time, does that count? Would it have to be in his/her pocket or hand?

What exactly qualifies?

This is just something I’ve always wondered, and my curiosity leads me to ask you all.

Thanks!
