This Indian Arm-Wrestling champion needs your support!
Today, as we are all watching the Olympics, we have somewhat realized the fact that despite India's population being so high, we are able to produce just so many athletes. Those athletes, too, have to go through a very hard journey, only with the dream to represent India internationally.
And so is the dream of my mother, Kosturi Sharmah—an arm wrestling champion from Guwahati, Assam. She is 52 and has only dreamt of one thing—to represent India internationally. Her hard work and dedication helped her earn an opportunity to do so. She received 2 gold medals, both in her dominating as well as non-dominating hand, in the Arm Wrestling Championship. After that, she qualified to participate in the World Arm Wrestling Championship in Greece.
After she got selected, she was interviewed in our local newspapers, and we thought the journey ahead would be a smooth sail. But we got to know that we would have to fund the entire trip to Greece and back by ourselves. We come from a very lower-middle-class family, where my dad is the sole earner. He earns enough to provide food on the table, and I work hard to cover my fees.
My mom went through a similar situation 28 years ago, where she had received a similar opportunity, but the lack of government support forced her to take a step back. This time, with all of our support, she got back in the game, but the government seems to fail her again. All of them have one excuse—that arm wrestling is not an Olympic sport. We tried several sports organizations and got a similar response.
Unfortunately, when the authorities who should be supporting her have failed us, we have no other way but to rely on the people around us. We have started a crowdfunding campaign for her on Ketto, and we were able to collect ₹59,000. We have managed to collect ₹30,000-₹40,000 on our own as well. But we still have a long way to go.
Please help us support her dreams, as time is not on her side. She is 52, and this might be her last chance
