Looking for recommendations for software
Hello everyone,
I got together all the hardware for my first homelab/NAS and now it's time to set it up. Since it's my first time building something like this I am still not totally sure on which OS and software to go for...
My original plan was to simply have a NAS for data storage for my photo catalog (Photoshop lightroom), older files and a place to store backups of my other devices. Additionally I thought I would look into setting up my own VPN to access my files also while travelling or simply visiting my parents, and maybe in the future I can see some very very simple self hosting for microservices like discord bots or a blog :) In summary: start with a basic NAS, then possibly add stuff on it step by step
Because of these ideas my initial plan was to install Proxmox, then have the NAS served by either trueNAS or unRAID.
My first question would be: which NAS software do you recommend, unRAID or trueNAS? I don't mind paying for the lifetime license of unRAID if it does what I need and it's a bit easier to use.
My build is planned around 4 HDD that I wanted to use in RAID 10, plus two (in RAID0) NVMe SSD to use as cache for faster access.
What do you think of my software choices? any other options I did not consider that you recommend?
Moreover, I looked into the r/homelab wiki but I didn't really fin any tutorial for setting up software, do you have any recommendations also on that? Specifically for running a NAS with proxmox + trueNAS/unRAID
P.S. my build:
- MOBO: Topton Intel N100 10Gbps 6*SATA
- Memory: Corsair Vengeance 1x32GB DDR5
- Boot Drive: Samsung 860 EVO 500GB
- Cache Drives: 2x Teamgroup MP44L 500GB
- Storage: 4x Seagate Ironwolf NAS 8TB 7200RPM
