I'm shocked TGI isn't 'doing well' because it's a masterwork
My experience with Halsey's music is limited- I loved Badlands although it came out two years too late for it to hit me the hardest (aka when I was in college). Regardless, I've admired them where I've seen them and enjoyed the singles and features I've heard.
I loved the concept of TGI and the singles were all incredible, so I picked it up and even went to the NYC show to grab a signed vinyl sleeve. This album has easily cracked my Top 10 of all time and I listen to a lot of damn music.
I could go on and on about how it's less "impersonation" and more Halsey isolating the parts of themself where their influences live and giving each a spotlight. What came out was a beautiful tribute of a person who saw their life ending and wanted the lasting impression of their art and themself to be a dedication to the incredible artists that have guided them. It's like one of those specimens that get cut into slices for study but together they make the whole. I don't think another artist else could have pulled it off, honestly I don't think anyone who wasn't genuinely looking death in the eyes could have. It's an album only Halsey could make because it couldn't exist without their lived experiences.
Not to mention that the styling of each song is so spot on. When my girlfriend was listening to it for the first time in the other room I wasn't paying attention while I rattled off influences. I forget who I said Panic Attack was, but 30 seconds into the song she went "no, this is Stevie" because it was so clear. It even got me to explore the music of PJ Harvey and Tori Amos because I love their associated songs.
I'm sad to see that the album clearly didn't get the reception Halsey was looking for (their discouraged tumblr posts have been shown on my feed). I know the launch with Lucky was rocky, but between the VMA performance, positive critical response, and #2 debut (although it had a big fall) it makes me sad to think they feel like the album isn't an incredible piece of art. I guess I was kind of inspired to make this post because I want them to know that this album is amazing and that they should be really, really proud of it.
Edit: To clarify a little, I'm less shocked that TGI isn't gaining huge commercial success but more saddened that Halsey appears to be taking that to heart when it's such a beautiful piece.
