Intubation while awake

Hi!

I am rewatching and I am currently on season 5 episode 17 (band girl with the seizures).

When they take her to the OR, Karen tells her not to worry coz she is in great hands, and when they show her she is awake but intubated.

I am not a doctor but I thought if you are about to have surgery or whatever procedure they will wait until you are sedated to intubate right?

Can anyone confirm if this is a mistake or if there is an actual reason why she was awake?
