Why You Should Always Test a Fragrance Before Buying It

Hi,

I wanted to share an important reminder for anyone exploring the world of scents, especially those tempted by the latest TikTok trends or influencer recommendations: always test a fragrance before buying it.

I’ve been down the rabbit hole of hyped fragrances, purchasing based on glowing reviews, social media buzz, or even a friend’s passionate recommendation. Recently, I tried Maison Crivelli’s Oud Maracuja, which has been raved about by many as a masterpiece. Naturally, I was excited—only to find myself shocked when I finally smelled it. For me, it didn’t live up to the hype at all.

This isn’t to bash the fragrance or anyone who loves it—it just highlights the deeply personal and subjective nature of scent. What smells divine to one person can be off-putting to another.

Here’s why testing is crucial:

1. Body Chemistry: Fragrances smell different on each person. A scent can be stunning in the air or on someone else, but flat or unpleasant on your skin.

2. Expectations vs. Reality: Descriptions and reviews, while helpful, often fail to capture the full experience. For example, a “juicy oud” might sound intriguing, but the actual scent could evoke something completely unexpected.

3. Hype Bias: Social media influencers and paid promotions can sometimes amplify trends that don’t align with your tastes. Remember, they’re often incentivized to hype certain fragrances.

Take the time to sample fragrances. Visit a boutique or grab a decant before committing to a full bottle. Your nose (and wallet) will thank you.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with a hyped fragrance? Let’s hear your stories—what surprised you, good or bad?
