Have you ever made rival managers better?

Pretty deep into my save and all the big name managers have retired. The generated staff and the former players are all fairly low rated, and they all seem to use 442. I was wondering if you have ever tweaked rival coaches to have better stats and secret attributes. What formations work best for the computer to use?
