Question about eating products with damaged packaging.

So I work in a supermarket and when staff find broken/damaged products we are allowed to have them (Once reported to the manager of course). I wanted to ask your opinions on this, to clarify its not from customers opening packaging but rather it coming off the truck damaged/being damaged when putting on the shelves.

I mostly opt for the pasta ready meals that may be split at the bottom or the plastic not sealed all the way round.

We are also able to take out of date/best before food too - anything I should completely avoid?

(FYI. I'm a broke student so I take all the free food I can get but am sensible and have basic food safety knowledge so wouldn't have something completely trashed ect.)
