Senior developer in a bank considering moving to Switzerland - is it worth?

Hello fellow devs,

I am in Finland holding a resident permit and am satisfied with my current IT job as a senior mobile developer. Am I happy? Not quite sure, as you will see below.

As an experienced dev of 24 year long IT career, my salary level is a joke: €5000 a month gross (and it was never better than this here).

With family, I barely manage to save €1000 a month, that too by living in a sparse Finnish village: Cold+dark weather, not much to do.

The healthcare is free, kids education is free - and I appreciate all those things.

However, I came across certain videos and Reddit threads that say that advantages of moving Switzerland still outweigh those free benefits.

We like Finnish schools where my kid studied for 6 years. But lately, things haven't been great for immigrant population in general and he also had his fare share of bad experiences. We wouldn't mind if there are comparable options. He knows basic German and if we find English schools, nothing better than that.

Wife has no job. Hence, family doesn't mind cooperating in any decision I make.

I am compelled to decide based on the following factors, for which I need help from all of you:

  • As I checked on LinkedIn, Switzerland doesn't have many jobs for mobile devs. How much is the Switzerland market competition for mobile roles? Does my being in a banking sector help?
  • Should I first upgrade my current role? I can easily become an architect but I don't see how should I progress from my current role (which is heavy on Swift, ObjC and some old time Java/C++) towards that, and whether it will give me a guaranteed move to Switzerland with good enough hike in a short time.
  • I have AWS hands-on + certification, but no experience in a company surrounding those. Same with Prompt engineering.
  • It seems in my current company I have hit the income ceiling of Finland. But the work life balance is great, which allows me to pursue my other interests (writing + app dev: see the point below). How does Switzerland stand w.r.t this?
  • I also have a side income of writing (average €1000 a month, of which Finnish govt takes away almost half) and app development business (no revenue so far). I saw a video that said in Switzerland, business is exempt from TAX until 100000 CHF/year. I can't find any sources that support this though.
  • A big part of my last 5 years in Finland, I was unemployed due to COVID, but I kept my head above the waters via unemployment benefits. But they helped because layoffs happened past minimum eligibility period. How is this in Switzerland considering the worst case scenario of it happening soon after my move, for example?
  • Last but not the least, how is the immigration legalities part? Is it nagging like the US H1b? I have no citizenship goals but permanent RP type of thing would give some comfort.

Thanks everyone in advance for taking time to help!
