Left

In the four years I’ve been biking in the city, I’ve had all positive experiences with other bikers, so I want to be careful to not ever be the asshole. On the 606 this morning, I was passing another person on a bike and got called out for not announcing “on your left” while going around. Fair. Totally understandable that it’s better to communicate, especially on a more narrow stretch. Then, not five minutes later, I called out “on your left” while passing another person on a bike. They responded “That’s not necessary” in a pretty neutral tone. So not scolding, but more informative? For reference, I leave plenty of space, try to use a pretty chipper tone, and am not whizzing through people. Is there a best practice for passing that I should stick to, or this a “never going to please everyone” kind of situation?
