CMV: People should have to pass a parenting test before having kids

If we require people to pass a test to drive a car, why don’t we do the same for raising a human being? Parenting is arguably one of the most important responsibilities someone can take on, yet there’s no real screening process.

I’m not saying the government should decide who can and can’t have kids, but I think we should at least have some kind of basic competency test. Maybe a required course on child development, financial responsibility, emotional regulation, etc? Too many kids are born into neglectful or outright harmful environments because their parents simply weren’t ready.

I get that this would be a logistical and ethical nightmare, but isn’t it worth discussing more?
