How to tell if a baby is crying because he's hungry or he has trapped wind (colic)?

How to tell if a baby is fussy/crying because he's hungry or he has trapped wind (colic)? Half of the time I'm confused about the cues because I don't want to feed him if he needs to he winded? Or do I just try to feed him and wind him all the time (which is what I'm doing right now?)
