Overheard a plot, any idea which book its from?

I overheard someone talking about a book he read and didn't get the chance to get the book name..

Set in those times with "lords/nobility/peasants" About a couple who gets the ire of a rich noble or merchant who tried to pay the guy for a night with his wife. Guy said no and later he's framed for a crime (something about theft or having contraband). Dude breaks out and runs out of town and idk afterwards

SPOILERS..............

apparently the twist is that his own wife was the one who planted fake evidence to frame him. Idk if she was coerced or straight up just heartless.
