Laila Majnu : Unpopular Opinion

I recently watched Laila Majnu for the first time on the big screen. And like Rockstar, this Imitiaz Ali movie was also a cult hit and a box office flop at its time. So my expectations were high, really high. And my partner is a really big Laila Majnu fanatic.

But to my surprise this movie didn’t do justice to the hype. Laila Majnu was about the love story of Laila and Majnu and that part was clearly missing from the movie.

It starts off with Majnu being Majnu and impressing Laila but Imitiaz Ali did not build on this plot, I don’t see their love store flourish or even establish in the plot. It’s super vague!

I see them together on screen for a very short period of time. It lacks emotional connection from the audience due to this.

And the character of Laila? You’re madly in love and you’re wanting to rebel too, but you can’t because of your dad? I mean they were talking to each other on phone during the initial days then why not in the second half when Laila told Majnu to wait. I mean I don’t get it. Laila’s character looks flawed for some reason. I mean you did him wrong once and you did it again, so that’s not a good light you want to show your lead heroine in.

Coming to the second half, damn it felt so freaking long! The dude is just running around the entire place, that’s it. Nothing more. It was okay till they showed scenic Kashmir valleys, but after 20mins even the valleys couldn’t save me from boredom.

And the childhood chemistry? Man such a cute plot, why not use that. That plot was so underexposed for some reason.

It starts off with Majnu creepily following her everywhere buying stuff for her and suddenly they’re in inseparable love? It just doesn’t add up. 😭

It was a solid 5/10 for me.
