Why do people care so much about us having careers and working?
I was diagnosed with AuDHD when I was 5 and growing up, I always hated working. I never understood the appeal of needing a career unless it’s something you’re extremely passionate about.
I am someone who is on disability/welfare and I only work part-time. I often hear a lot from people that I’m wasting my life not advancing towards a career or working full time and that I’m only being lazy by “stealing tax dollars”. The truth is, I don’t want to work full-time. I already get so burnt out working 20 hours a week constantly on my feet and I know some people on the spectrum can work full time and feel fine but I’m tired of society, at least where I live, making autistic people like me feel ashamed for only working so little.
It’s bad enough that a lot of autistic people struggle finding jobs, why should we feel forced to conform to neurotypical standards?
