Do the terms "Christian" and "Christianity" colloquially mean "Protestant" in your National Spanish?

In the United States it's common among heritage Spanish speakers of Latin American descent to use the terms in this way: i.e "Are you Catholic or Christian?" "I'm not Christian, I'm Catholic" "My mom converted to Christianity (from Catholicism) in 2003."

I've heard at least 10 different people use it in this way, including my girlfriend, whose mom is a Guatemalan Protestant. Curiously though I have also heard Catholics with Mexican parents use the terms this way too.

I am Catholic, and it is sometimes quite irritating, even a little offensive in terms of my gut reaction, to hear the terms used this way. Of course I understand it's not meant in that way, but it feels like it almost implies Catholics somehow aren't Christian.

Are the equivalent terms used this way in in your country? If so, is there any controversy or public discourse around it?
