the cruelty of season 3

i feel like i keep seeing the "they were shown killing and eating their friend in episode one, what were you expecting?" argument when anyone says the characters went in an unexpected direction this season. my personal answer is that i wasn't expecting this level of senseless cruelty seemingly out of nowhere. obviously i knew the murder and cannibalism was coming but that's so they can eat- it's for survival. even the ritualistic aspects of it seemed to show some humanity to me, like they feel so guilty over what they're doing that they have to give it some greater meaning just so they can live with themselves. what they're doing to ben isn't about survival, it's just plain cruelty, which is not something i personally saw coming or really enjoy watching. i do think i would've enjoyed it if we saw more of a build up to shauna spiraling into this sadistic version of herself, but it seemed a bit rushed into and forced to me. she definitely had her moments in the last season but she seemed to have remorse after the fact and tried to do better. i really think they shouldn't have done such a big time jump between seasons 2 and 3 because we seemed to have missed out on seeing some very significant character developments. with all that being said, it's still my favorite show, im just disappointed with some of the choices being made this season.
