Why I think Kitty and Yuri are far from over
Oh yes, I’m ready to be downvoted into oblivion 🤣 It’s not an anti-Min-ho post, tho! I just want to address some comments claiming that Yuri and Kitty are over or that they’ve never been romantic. I’ve written this based on the possible redemption arc for Yuri.
Let me list the reasons why I believe the show will revisit their relationship:
- Tropes used: Enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, oblivious to love, unknowingly in love, second love, mistress of mixed messages, longing looks, held gazes, the matchmaker, fate drives us together, and green-eyed epiphany.
I think the two most interesting tropes in the current context are "oblivious to love" and "second love," which might lead to a "love epiphany" trope.
I find it really interesting how Yuri always runs away from her feelings for Kitty or simply downplays them (the scenes with Juliana, the "I have to catch the cab" scene, the "I don’t want to go there, but now I’m going because Kitty is going" scene, etc.). And the moment things get serious (the letter), she shuts it all down and runs away. Shall I mention the fact that the show kept Kitty and Yuri apart after the letter revelation? Why? Well... maybe to address it later.
- Grand gestures.
I think Yuri is the queen of grand gestures on the show. Even when she’s not on speaking terms with Kitty, she still finds ways to connect with her. I think these grand gestures by Yuri have set things in motion for Kitty many times, serving as key elements in their story.
This could be an interesting part of Yuri’s future arc because: a) she will need to realize at some point why she was doing all that, and b) she won’t be in a position to pull the strings for a while, which could be the reason she grows.
- Deliberate choices in the narrative: Why were there constant interruptions when Kitty and Yuri were having scenes together? Almost every single time for two seasons straight 😭
Why was it specifically Min-ho who saw Kitty and Yuri kissing and it hasn’t been addressed? Could this be brought back in the future? 😳
Why does Juliana get with Praveena right away while Yuri is left single? Yuri finally has to face the world and grow - maybe she’ll have an epiphany? And the most important question: why haven’t Kitty and Yuri had a heart-to-heart chat, and why haven’t their feelings been addressed? The show decides to send Kitty on a summer tour with unresolved feelings after she was hurt by Yuri, while Yuri is left broken with almost no support 😭
So while some fans believe that Yuri and Kitty are over, and sure, that could happen, they’d need to clear the air really fast and stay friends. I don’t think that’s going to happen. Now that Yuri is single and has hit rock bottom (from bad to worse), it’s time for her growth, and I think her epiphany could be a love epiphany - that it was always Kitty for her, that she can make amends, that she can stop being oblivious and that she can be a better person. This might be one of the best things about romance in general - growth, especially for queen bee characters.
I think Kitty’s interest in Min-ho is an important part of the entire story, too. It could set up a plot where Yuri pines from afar, and not only that, the storyline might parallel Dae and Kitty’s situation, where this time Yuri won’t do anything to ruin Kitty’s relationship or happiness because she has grown. The angst would be amazing! Will this happen? I don’t know, but it would definitely be a fun storyline to explore! Also, can you imagine if Yuri gets a taste of her own medicine? Watching the person she’s falling for be with someone else - well, well, well, how the tables have turned 🥹
So yeah, nothing is over until it's over in the world of storytelling!
