Just forced myself to rewatch the Oliver episodes to see if I could gain a new perspective on them.
Nope. Can't do it. Everything about this arc and Marissa's choices in regards to Oliver is just beyond infuriating. From her literally witnessing Oliver try to run Ryan and Luke into a lake when they're racing golf carts and brushing it off as no big deal to her refusing to listen to Luke when he confirms to her that Natalie Bishop is not a student at Pacific. Not to mention the fact that Ryan literally caught Oliver trying to buy cocaine and actually had the decency to help him out of that situation. Just so much damn gaslighting going on during this storyline (from Oliver most of all).
I understand mental illness is a very sensitive topic and Oliver to put it plainly was severely mentally ill but considering he uses his illness as a weapon against people that doesn't exactly make him any more endearing or sympathetic as a character (especially considering Josh apparently based him on a real person that his friend dated who used a fake cancer diagnosis in order to guilt trip her into staying with him). All I could say during this arc was poor Ryan. Literally almost everyone close to him turned their backs on him due to this situation (Marissa most of all). Also Marissa's actions in The Truth once she discovered the real Natalie Bishop and realized just how unstable Oliver really was were completely nonsensical and made the whole situation worse. Instead of calling the cops or her parents and just getting out of that hotel immediately she confronts Oliver and then calls Ryan? How does that make any sense, all that accomplished was it sent Oliver into a paranoid frenzy while holding a gun.
