[Spoiler] Why does Billy hate Lucas so much?

Why does Billy hate Lucas so much? Is it a racial issue, or is it a boy thing like he's protecting Max from getting her heart broken. I don't think he cares too much for Max at the beginning of the season though. Anybody have the answer.
