Natural Fences are free, never degrade, and produce stuff for you!
I don't really use traditional fencing anymore, especially in early game. There is nothing more frustrating to me than having to repair fences.
Natural fencing is my favorite for several reasons. 1) It's beautiful and lends such a comfy country vibe. 2) It's free. Just use tree seeds you gather as you get wood. 3) it's a nonstop producer of moss! I get on average 20 moss a day just from my animal pen fence. 4) you can place tappers and get your syrups and saps without tying up other land on your farm.
Tips for building a natural fence:
I find it is best to wait till winter as long as you have tree fertilizer unlocked so you have better control over the build and don't have to squash so many seeds and saplings.
Start with the trees you want to be full growth and plant them every other tile in a line. Fertilize and wait for them to reach full growth. Then go in with other tree seeds to fill in the gaps. Fertilize these as well if it's winter so they will reach Sapling height and restrict walking before you open the coops and barns on the first of spring.
Make sure to leave either a 3 or four tile gap where you want gates. I will typically use 2 hardwood fence posts and two gates to create an entrance. I like wide gates.
I recommend placing at least 1 row of walkway tiles on each side to ensure walking space as the trees will drop seeds around them. 2 rows will make it so you don't have to clean up saplings very often at all.
You can also use the gaps between the big trees to place kegs, preserve jars, crystalariums, lightning rods, etc. Great way to maximize your land usage.
Note: You could absolutely build a fence with nothing but kegs, jars, etc. But that takes time and money. This is more of a solution for early in the game when you need cheap solutions that don't tax your energy reserves or precious supplies of wood, stone, or iron.
