Clueless college question (help!)

A young family member (17) with a complicated and sad history is trying to make something of himself. He hasn’t attended school for 2 years and has 2 Nat 5s with C grades. He is no contact with both parents (separated). He cannot return to secondary school.

He’s looking to become a secondary school teacher, and together we’re trying to figure out the road. He needs to get some highers, but also looking into level 4 and NC education courses for exposure and to show that he’s keen. Highers seem to be closed for applications until April 25, and most are looking for at least 3 Nat 5s.

Looking for any guidance or suggestions at all! Has anyone made this difficult journey? What should he be prioritising?
