On authors dropping unfinished series
Hello fellows readers, I've been thinking about this and would like your input. Do you think it's okay if an author drops a series in the middle ? Not for health/personal reasons, but because they just don't want to anymore. I'm talking about series where there is a plot in progress, not things like Agatha Christies where each book can be read alone. I'm hesitating between two stances :
A) Authors are not our slaves, they can stop whenever they want (except contractual obligations but let's put it aside). Most of us can change jobs if we can/want, so why can't they if they're unhappy ? Series go over years so author might just not be the same person anymore, were also not entitled to the author's work. Also it's better to let us know it's over than just postpone the release date eternally.
OR
B) When readers buy a book from a serie it's under the impression that it will be finished. It's selled as book 1/5 for example, so it's false advertisement if we don't get the rest. A lot of people (me included) don't want to read an unfinished series, it's frustrating to end on a cliffhanger, so I wouldn't have picked up the book if I knew. We invested time and emotions into the series while being selled that we will have an ending. So if authors don't have any other reason than 'I don't want to', they should at least put out a small book to give closure, idk maybe hire a ghostwriter to help ?
I'm weighted more toward point A, but still curious about your opinions.
