I’m so disappointed in this chapter and it was highly missed potential (rant + spoilers)
I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I’m extremely disappointed in this chapter and I didn’t feel the same hype I felt playing the previous chapters.
First of all, there’s a noticeable formula in these chapters that typically is along the lines of: Protagonist finds a new place, they do some puzzles, main antagonist is introduced but isn’t a threat at first, they do some more puzzles and find some lore, the main threat transforms into a more monstrous version of themself and chases the protagonist, protagonist kills the threat, they walk into a new area and then there’s a cliffhanger.
I was willing to excuse the formula for the first three chapters because I expected chapter four to pull the rug under us and do something different, but it’s just the same thing. It’s just starting to become stale and repetitive.
The characters in this are also wasted potential. Pianosaurus is an obvious example but I wasn’t expecting much from the start considering how other characters like the smiling critters and Bron are hyped but are either never or barely used in the end. But what I’m really pissed about is the wasted potential of Yarnaby but mostly the doctor.
The concept of the doctor was cool as hell, I was probably most excited for him more than anything. Us fighting one of the employees instead of the toys? It was an extremely intriguing idea that got me hyped… only for the doctor to die after like 20 minutes because you pulled out a chip.
Yarnaby’s death was barely anything, I almost forgot about him near the end of the chapter, and the nightmare critters did next to nothing particularly worthy, their roles could of been filled by the other smiling critter toys. And Ollie being the prototype? Literally everybody predicated that, even security breach did the same trope before with the mimic.
And this is extremely subjective, but I also found this chapter really boring at times due to the long duration of the puzzles. But this could just be because of my ADD and not the games fault, so I’ll probably take the blame for that.
What I did like were the graphics of course, Doey was a welcome new character despite him ultimately falling to the same formula as the other antagonists (I use this word in a technical sense, not because he’s actually evil) and I enjoyed his gimmick. I was glad to see Poppy and Kissy again although Poppy didn’t do much but that’s to be expected. The animations were very smooth and nice, Yarnaby’s movements were very realistic and animal-like. And oh my god the voice actors were incredible, the tape where the parents found Doey? Absolutely spinechilling.
I do apologise for being very negative, but I had really high expectations for this chapter considering how good the previous ones were. But ultimately this game just fell as a stale repeat of the previous ones with the mildest hints of flavour as an attempt to spice it up. If you genuinely enjoyed this chapter, then I’m glad you did! This is simply my personal preference and everybody has their own opinions on media.
