panic attacks when alone, how can i overcome it?
I 21f have been struggling with panic disorder for 8 months now. These last 6 months, I have not been able to be alone at all. Not at home, not in a grocery store, no where. I must have someone that I trust near at arms length. I gave up driving and just lost complete independence. I was able to hold a job because certain coworkers knew about my condition, so it made it easier to be there and I worked with my roommates. I would follow my roommates everywhere. If one went to the store and the other was at her boyfriends house, I would follow one to the store. It got so bad that they developed a system to make sure I was never alone. One would always be with me at all times. They’re such great friends, but I decided to go back home 3 hours away to seek better help because I felt bad that they had to do that for me. My mom started a new job a couple weeks ago and my dad works from home, so it seemed like the best situation for me. Until his company received word that everyone will need to return to work 3 days out of the week. Now my parents are frantically trying to figure out what to do. Even discussing that one will quit. I feel terrible, I feel like the worst burden ever. I feel sorry to put this stress on my family, my mental health is deteriorating. It has gotten worse these past 3 months after my sisters passing. It made me realize that my irrational fears aren’t as irrational as I thought. It’s so bad to the point where I can’t even stay with a neighbor or my aunt. It feels as though I am only comfortable with certain people (roommates and parents) and that with anyone else, I will have panic attacks. my panic attacks are all consuming terror. My heart rate shoots up to the 190’s/200’s, I get dizzy, lightheaded, etc. I see a therapist and she mentioned that lexapro would help. I want to try anything, but I’m fearful of the medication. I Read people’s experiences with it and they say that they get the worst panic attacks that they’ve ever had while the body is getting used to the medication, they say it causes emotional blunting, and some say that it helps for anxiety, but doesn’t do much for panic attacks. I just don’t know. Please anyone help.
