Agmatine is a heavy hitter
I've been on and off agmatine before, usually doses of 500mg ot 1000mg, with varying success. Usually I do well, and then slowly develop apathy until I discontinue it.
I had the bright idea to try a lower dose of 250mg this time once a day, and I had been taking it for 4 months straight, and was feeling great.
The last 2 weeks, I started to get curious if agmatine was really needed anymore, because I felt like I had made a lot of progress on my mental health. I discontinued it, and I cannot believe how much agmatine was doing for me. Here's what happened when I got off agmatine:
- anxiety; usual anxieties became urgent-feeling and obsessive.
- intrusive thoughts; hard to ignore anxious thoughts that are so prominent, it's all I can think about and ruminate about.
- emotional reactivity; fight or flight reactions would trigger very quickly and take over any rational thinking.
- drug/dopamine cravings; immediately I noticed craving dopaminergic substances.
- restlessness
- increased energy and impulsivity
- lessened effects from cannabis; my tolerance started going up rapidly and providing me with less relief.
I am diagnosed with ADHD and some OCD tendencies, but I didn't know how much the agmatine was medicating the OCD side of things. These past few months I've felt "normal", and have had the mental clarity to manage my own mental health through meditation and mindfulness. I suspect that the agmatine played a large role in my mental health, not just phisiologically but psychologically too by providing distance between my mind and my thoughts.
Edit: I forgot to mention another interesting benefit. When on agmatine, I get heavily potentiated effects from things like cannabis, alcohol, kratom, etc. The alcohol potentiation is so strong that I was getting excessively buzzed from a single drink at a restaurant. My effective kratom dose is about a quarter of most people's minimum dose. With cannabis, I'm able to use hardly any of it and it still consistently stays effective for my ADHD.
Edit 2: ab 4mo after I posted this I took a break again from agmatine, because I noticed it can cause brain fog. I was off agmatine for nearly a month this time. The same exact symptoms returned, but even worse. It's pretty clear I've got some other mental health issues going on. I genuinely feel like a different person while not on agmatine.
Edit 3: I've discovered a more accurate diagnosis than ADHD and OCD, being BPD (borderline personality disorder). Only mentioning this because it might help others.
