Are there any artists who continually got better over their career and made even more popular music as time went on?

My favourite band is Metallica and popular opinion on their music is their earliest stuff Is the most popular, but after their first 5 albums or so, people haven't enjoyed their newer stuff so much

Then I was thinking about how that tends to be a pretty popular Trend with most artists, a lot of people would say "I love their early stuff but then I lost interest"
