Why is the hybrid battery so large?

If I remember correctly, the capacity is only less than 2 kWh. Most EVs batteries are at least 65kWh yet they dont awkwardly take so much cargo space. Is this poor design? Model Y battery when removed from the vehicle is flat and not that large.
