Suica not working on Kyoto subway

We just arrived in Kyoto for our stay. We tried using Suica to enter the subway station, but it was not working. We had to pay at the kiosk for a ticket and pay again to exit the station. Is there no way to use Suica in Kyoto? (We got on the karusama line and switched to the Tozai line.)
