Experiences from other Israeli-Canadians? Israeli's growing up abroad?
I was born in Ra'anana and moved to Toronto as a 4 yearold. I am 27 now. I identify mostly as an Israeli-born Canadian, but thats starting to change and I've begun thinking deeply about returning to Israel after finishing my degree.
I am curious about the experiences of being Israeli but growing up in other countries. There really is no Israeli community in Toronto, wikipedia tells me there are only 15,000-30,000 Israelis living in all of Canada, making us one of the smallest minorities (and according to Canada, we are visible minorities; doesn't matter if youre ashkenazi). Though there is a large Jewish Canadian community here, I have still always felt like an outsider with them.
One major thing that separates my experiences from that of Canadian jews, is that I feel like I have to denounce Israeli policies to be accepted into left-leaning circles. Every party I go to always devolves into Israeli politics the moment someone learns I was born in Israel. Since I was a child I knew to keep quiet about where I was born and to be purposefully vague about where I am from: "I was brought up in Canada."
I am coming to realize that growing up like this has caused me to internalize shame about where I am from, and the idea of being proud to be Israeli always felt wrong. Can anyone else relate to this?
