Software freelancing in Finland: Rewarding or punishing?
As an immigrant employed in a software product company, I enjoy a great Finnish work-life balance + average salary & perks. And I am highly grateful for all the flexibility + remote.
Yet, sometimes it feels financially restrictive, given that I am 2+ decades old programmer.
I know that the tax rate in Finland isn't a great motivator to switch for marginal payoffs. Yet, I hear it quite often that freelancers with their own LLC (or those teamed up with companies such as Maverick, TalentHub, Unikie) earn a handsome amount, and also enjoy good number of holidays.
- What is the professional life like for a software freelancer?
- Is it a steep learning curve where you have to ride a fat skillset?
- Can one ask for client's help in stuff he/she is not specialized in? How much differentiation one faces against employees?
- Does one chase targets by working beyond hours (since it's hourly paid mostly)?
- What's the financial equation for working as a company (insurance etc)?
- How much part non-tech skills (especially speaking/writing Suomi) play?
Some of these questions are arising out of my previous freelancing experience (outside Finland), so please forgive my implied (and possibly prejudiced) assumptions
Thank you for your time!
