Is there any reason not to be spamming summons?

Playing the OG for the first time, before I move on to Crisis Core and then the remakes...

Is there any disadvantage to just spamming summons to clear out trash mobs? It doesn't really seem like there is, and with the speed-up option available, the long animations are a non-issue. Am I somehow playing the game wrong by doing this?
