North West's cringe lyrics on Childlike Things are an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise amazing album
(Fluent Japanese speaker here for over 20 years)
Apologies if this has already been discussed, but does anyone else feel that North West's contribution to Childlike Things was cringe and really unfortunate?
- I know some people feel ick that a minor was brought on to an album called "Eusexua" (but at least it was on the track called "Childlike Things"
- I feel iffy about the choice to bring a "nepo baby" on to the album, albeit musically I think the track was a banger
- I feel iffy about North West rapping in Japanese, but it seems like she has really been studying the language and I don't think Japanese people would particularly mind
BUT - the LYRICS are mega cringe/WTF and don't fit in AT ALL with the album or song
For those who are not aware, I have translated the lyrics here for your convenience:
こんにちは
私の名前はノースちゃん
カリフォルニアから東京
イエス様 王様 (Ah-ah)
神様賞賛 (Ah-ah)
イエスは唯一の真の神 (You need to know)
Hello
My name is North-chan
From California to Tokyoa
Jesus, King
Praise God
Jesus is the one true god (you need to know)
WTF is this drivel doing on an album like Eusexua?
Like even if I can get over all the things I wrote above, it just feels so out of place to suddenly have religious shit / a christian testimonial shoehorned into it. It just feels like North West is still to young to realize she has been brainwashed into her fathers bizarre galoshes wearing christian cult.
And now that cringe moment in her life and her father's icky influence are part of the permanent record. Its really unfortunate.
I wonder if FKA Twigs even realized what she was saying . . . .
Just a big bummer on what is otherwise a masterpiece.
Edit: This is kind of nitpicking, but North West calls herself "North-chan" - chan is a cute/girly suffix to attach to names, but you typically do not use these kind of suffixes to your own name, you just use it when addressing others, and you certianally don't use it when introducing yourself. It just sounds kind of amateurish in the lyrics.
