Dog does best on Farmers Dog. Any comparable/safe alts that are not Purina, Frommers, or HSD?

I know this sub has a lot of (science-backed) hate for Farmer’s Dog, but it has worked well for me, and I’m wondering about similar alternatives.

When I first got my girl (4yo, 50 Lbs. Rescue, likely a lab/GSD mix) the foster had been feeding her homemade, but the shelter had her on Purina Pro so we went with that. However despite following the guidelines and getting tons of exercise she was overweight at her first checkup.

I tried all the biggies - she rejected Frommers and Hill Science. Doesn’t like kibble. Subscribed to FD and she loved it; however after speaking to my vet about DCM I fed her chicken only, which has no lentils and my vet approved. Gave her PP kibble as treats. Weight came off, happy days.

I noticed she was eating grass a lot and developed allergies so I switched back to PPP, wet, sensitive stomach. Her poops were runny and the weight crept back up, despite feeding less than the guidelines (again, PLENTY of exercise- 2hr. hikes a day, fenced yard, etc).

So now back to FD. Normal poops. But all the cautionary tales are needling me. Anyone have a similar story, or recs similar to FD that’s not so controversial?
