Avoid publisher drama and learn Chinese - Share your story

Hey, danmei fans! You may have seen me floating around and posting information about learning Chinese, so here I am again with another Chinese-related post.

My last post has plenty of information on why you should learn Chinese and how to start quickly.

About me

For those who don’t know me, I’m a Cantonese heritage speaker who started learning Mandarin four years ago. Since starting, I’ve made many wonderful friends with other danmei fans who are also learning Chinese, read a lot of danmei webnovels in Chinese and have listened to many audio dramas.

Since my last post (7 months ago), I’ve read the new edition of 天官赐福 (TGCF - Heavenly Official’s Blessing) in Chinese. I read the fan translation over 4 years ago, so this counted as a “re-reading”. I'm not going to lie; I’m not a fan of re-reading; as much as I enjoyed the journey, I wasn’t as wowed as I was the first time. Nevertheless, it was a brilliant experience and a great achievement.

Some thoughts

It doesn't cost much to learn Chinese. There's no need to spend $1000+ on a course or travel to a Chinese-speaking country. It's possible to learn from home. Spending a bit of money ($50-$100) on tools, textbooks, app subscriptions for a few months, and graded readers is all it takes.

If you need more support, signing up for private online lessons is a great option. These lessons cost between $20 and $40 per hour.

Once you can read danmei (which doesn't take long), you can support the authors by buying the physical publication or the original webnovel from the original platform.

Don't want to spend your money on publishers that you don't trust? Then, spend your money on learning Chinese instead. It'll be worth every penny!

Your Stories

Each time there’s publication and licensing drama, it upsets many fans because it prevents them from accessing their favourite danmei, leading to many considering the possibility of learning Chinese to avoid any future drama.

I want to take this opportunity to bring together the community and encourage those interested in learning Chinese.

So, comment below and share your Chinese journey journey and success stories. Inspire and encourage others to learn Chinese, buy and read the original works and support the authors.
