2025 Crosstrek: Unsafe Seats Sent Me to the ER 2 times left me with chronic pain—Subaru’s Cost-Cutting Has Gone Too Far...I've lost trust in Subaru....

Hey r/Subaru,

I’ve been a loyal Subaru owner for years, but my experience with the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Limited has been a nightmare—literally. I’ve ended up in the ER twice with a busted neck and severe pain, and the culprit? Subaru’s new fixed headrest design and poorly engineered seats.

I’m sharing my story because I know I’m not alone in this, and I’m hoping to spark change. I’ve uploaded pictures (check them out!) comparing the Crosstrek seats to the 2024 Outback Touring, so you can see just how drastically Subaru’s cost-cutting measures have affected their design.

When Did Subaru Implement This Headrest Design?

Subaru introduced the non-adjustable, forward-tilted headrests in the 2024 Crosstrek. Prior to this, models like the 2023 Crosstrek had headrests with adjustable tilt. This change has caused widespread discomfort and frustration among owners. Worse yet, the mounting specifications mean you can’t easily retrofit previous adjustable headrests into newer models.

Potential Aftermarket Solution: Would You Be Interested?

I want to ask everyone: If I created an aftermarket company selling comfortable, luxurious-feeling adjustable headrests, would you be interested?

Imagine something similar to the headrests in a Defender or Range Rover—high-quality materials, fully adjustable, and designed for comfort. The truth is, these are not expensive to manufacture. I’ve already started conversations with a large manufacturer in China, and the price difference between what we could produce versus what Subaru includes is shocking.

If this is something you’d like, comment below or let me know—I think there’s a market for this.

Upgrades: Rims and Speakers

I replaced the stock rims with Vision Monaco 17x7 wheels and Blizzak DM-V2 snow tires for a timeless, beautiful aesthetic that balances function and form. The stock rims? Let’s just say they were so unattractive they couldn’t even fetch a resale.

As for the speakers, the factory ones were a disaster—deafening, unbalanced, and only sounding decent with specific songs. I swapped them for Alpine S2-S69C (front) and S65 (rear) speakers, with added Sound Shield noise dampening for clarity. These upgrades make the car feel more premium, but they’re things I had to fix myself, not features Subaru delivered.

Seat Analysis: Crosstrek vs. Outback

Crosstrek Seat Flaws (2025 Model):

  • The lower 2/3 of the seat back feels relatively normal, but the upper thoracic/cervical section abruptly shifts to a perpendicular angle (straight up and down).
  • The headrest is permanently tilted forward, forcing your neck into an unnatural position, almost like being trapped in a cocoon. It’s an ergonomic disaster.
  • The leather seats look poorly made, with airy pockets and loose material that feels unfinished, especially in the back seats. It’s as though the leather isn’t form-fitted to the seat structure, and there’s a lack of proper padding or cushioning in certain areas.

Outback Seat Design (2024 Model):

  • A flat and consistent back support throughout the entire seat, allowing for natural posture.
  • Features adjustable lumbar support (which should be standard).
  • The headrest tilt is adjustable, making it safer and more comfortable for a range of body types.

When you compare the two, it’s clear Subaru has prioritized cost-cutting and crash-test optimization over customer comfort and safety.

Subaru’s Market Goals: Are They Listening?

Subaru has openly stated its ambition to grow from 4% to 5% U.S. market share, but the decisions they’re making—like cutting corners on seat design, interior quality, and usability—are alienating loyal customers like me.

Mazda is slowly gaining popularity, and making better looking interiors that are rivaling subaru's ancient designs... Like they are holding on to the 2 things that protect their brand : Crash safety and symetrical AWD. but the truth is. Symmetrical AWD is getting more advanced and universal....

If Subaru focused on better design, customer comfort, and quality materials while avoiding unnecessary cost-cutting, they could not only meet but exceed their market share goals. Safety and reliability aren’t enough when basic features and ergonomics are sacrificed. Subaru, listen to your customers—we want to support you, but you need to step up.

Cost-Cutting vs. Safety: What’s Really Going On?

Subaru claims this new headrest design is for “anti-whiplash” safety, but let’s be real—crash test dummies can’t feel pain. The design feels like a manipulative attempt to exploit crash-test grading systems while cutting costs.

Meanwhile, higher-end trims like the Outback Touring 2024 and Ascent 2024 (and luxury vehicles) still offer adjustable headrests and superior materials. Why is Subaru forcing their top-line Crosstrek customers into inferior, painful designs? It feels like a slap in the face to loyal buyers like me.

Also, can anyone confirm if any of the 2025 Subaru models still have adjustable headrests?

Here’s the kicker: Luxury brands wouldn’t dare pull this stunt. They invest in soft foam for comfort, dense foam for safety, and adjustable tilt to accommodate diverse body types. Subaru, you can’t claim “affordability” while charging $30K–$40K for a car with seats this bad.

Can Subaru Let Me Return This Car?

Does anyone know if Subaru will let me return my car? I bought it on 12/26/2024, so I’m just days away from hitting the one-month mark. The problem is, issues like spine, neck, and back pain take time to manifest.

I’m seriously considering taking Subaru to small claims court. It’s absurd to spend this much money on a car only to deal with medical issues caused by poor design.

Other Problems with the 2025 Crosstrek

  1. Infotainment System:
    • Laggy touchscreen that takes anywhere from 2–9 seconds to respond depending on random factors like outside temperature. My 2019 Crosstrek never had this issue.
    • Frequent Bluetooth dropouts during songs—beyond frustrating.
    • Digitized climate controls? Bad move. If the screen malfunctions, you lose access to heat or cooling.
  2. Interior Quality:
    • Stock speakers are laughably bad—worth $40 tops on Alibaba.
    • Rear leather seats look cheap and feel unfinished, with loose-fitting leather and a lack of padding.
  3. Exterior Design:
    • Stock rims are unattractive and have no resale value.

A Call to Action

I’m calling on Subaru to fix this glaring issue and prioritize their customers' health and safety. These seats are not just uncomfortable—they’re unsafe.

If you’ve had medical issues or expenses related to Subaru’s new seat design, I encourage you to comment below or share your story. Let’s amplify this issue and get Subaru to take action.

Does anyone think a petition for people to sign of some sort could facilitate and inspire change?

TL;DR

  • Crosstrek seats are a health hazard. Fixed headrests force your neck into an unnatural position, causing severe pain and medical issues.
  • Subaru introduced this design in the 2024 Crosstrek, replacing the adjustable headrests found in earlier models.
  • Compared to the 2024 Outback seats (flat back, adjustable lumbar, and headrest tilt), the Crosstrek feels like a downgrade.
  • Leather seats look poorly fitted, with loose material and a lack of proper padding.
  • Subaru’s cost-cutting and crash-test manipulation have hurt customer comfort and safety.
  • If you’ve experienced pain or medical issues from Subaru’s seat designs, share your story.

Advice: I would recommend buying a 2022 model, maybe 23 based on features in the car. You won't have these stupid issues.... More comfortable seats (at least then the 24 onward). If you get a Crosstrek limited or sport, 2022. You will be ahead of the depreciation curve, you'll have the 2.5L engine, so your car will hold the most value since the new features are def not important and only cause problems, affecting resell value....

You can see the terrible design and lack of comfort in these seats ... The sides also hug your shoulders and upper back making your pain and posture worse... Imagine sleeping at a rest stop with this head rest... hahah. Might as well take it off....

These were the wrong size rims and tires.... It left too little clearance in the rear wheel well.... But we fixed it be getting different size tires. These stuck out like 0.65 inches and i didnt like that, plus it would affect mpg....

close up

new tires, Blizzak DMV2s instead of sw90s. This car needs the dmv2s. That was a mistake of the guy at discount tire...

Close up showing the 2025 crosstrek limited seat.... How it sucks you in back and forces your upper back and neck forward...This is zero % ergonomic. I don't care what the \"Regulatory rules\" for automakers say.... First of all, it is just a guideline. Subaru does not have to do what they say...Anyone with half a brain knows this is not a safe seat, not good for human posture, and a non-adjustable tilt in a headrest is not safe as everyone has different back and neck posture, and or heath conditions.

Here is the 2024 outback touring i think... i am not sure if it is 2024 or 2025 but it was in the show room. you can see the driver seat head rest is in the furthest forward tilt position, compared to the passenger seat that is set all the way back. I think they honestly messed that up even, should have made it completely perpendicular. helps for car sleeping on road trips, neck pain, taking pressure off neck, etc.

another angle

my wheels and tires flush with body - making a clean look that is both rugged and has a luxurious feel and design.
