How does Jesus's sacrifice work?

I've long struggled to understand this part of Christianity, which seems to be of central importance to that religion.

I understand that this isn't a debate subreddit, but I want to hear how Christians think about this because I've never been able to make any sense of it.

Jesus comes to earth in human form, is killed, and this somehow causes humans to be saved? What is the connection here?
