Sanskrit or Hindi in 9th?

Will they teach the basics of Sanskrit in 9th grade if you haven't touched a Sanskrit book at all? All four of our city toppers of 10th from our school choosed sanskrit. Is taking sanskrit worth it and can you learn it without going to tuition for it?
