There's substitutes for virtually everything American. Buy Canadian when you can but the UK, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and others, have great substitutes.
Clothing? Our outdoor clothing brands are even better. Arc'teryx instead of Patagonia for technical outdoor wear. Lululemon, Aritzia, and Reigning Champ for nicer brands. For basics sub out GAP and Old Navy for H&M or Uniqlo, or other Canadian brands. Avoid Nike. Adidas is German.
Food? Avoid Mcdonalds, starbucks, Chipotle. We have A&W, local coffee shops (which are usually cheaper btw), Burrito Boyz in the GTA. Pizza Hut has been downhill for decades but there's plenty of local stores.
American cars? Firstly, Japanese cars have been the best in the world for decades, American cars are notoriously shit, and Toyota and Honda build a lot of models in Ontario. The RAV4, Corolla, and CRV are built in Ontario. BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen have some cars built in Germany if you must. Kia and Hyundai are great nowadays and more reliable than most American brands while being more affordable than Toyota and Honda.
Warm vacation? Honestly, skip Florida. It's cheap to fly there but even before this it was more expensive than going elsewhere once you factor in stays and taxis and food. And the quality of your vacation will be much better. Mexico could use our support. If you want to go to Disney, think about Japan or France. Portugal and Spain are great destinations for the climate. Japan in particular is one of the most attractive places to visit given their currency is weak now as well.
Shoppers is Canadian for beauty products. For the love of good use your PC points well because it's expensive but it's even cheaper than Sephora (french company) for beauty products when you use points well.
Circle K, Petro Canada, Canadian Tire Gas, all Canadian.
Walmart and Amazon have been destroying small businesses for years and people have been screaming to shop local. Go to your local supplement / health food store and stock up. Amazon is a ripoff for most niche things around the $20 price point anyways. You can probably find the same thing at Dollarama for $5. Most products you can find made by Unilever instead of P&G.
Food Basics, Metro, No Frills, Loblaws, Farm Boy, Sobeys, all Canadian. Your local ethnic grocery store is probably owned by someone in the community. Dollarama instead of Dollar Tree.
Netflix keeps raising prices, use Crave, try Britbox, watch some Korean dramas, explore Bollywood movies, if you're in the GTA they have Indian movies playing in Cineplex theatres. Watch Japanese classic films.
Buy Ontario or BC wine, Alberta and Manitoba whisky.
Now the harder stuff to substitute is Apple, Microsoft, and Google. That we (and the world) needs to work on.
