Asking a woman "why are you single?"

I was having a conversation with a guy the other day and when the topic of relationships came up he asked me if I currently have a boyfriend. When I told him I'm single he proceeded to ask me why... So, what goes through your mind when asking a woman this? Is this simply to make small talk? Are you just curious?
